THE THREAT

Cora

Watching Grigori saunter into the room, Cora felt her jaw tighten. She would never like him and having to rely on him grated.

“Thank you for coming,” she said, keeping her voice even and neutral. “We may move up the timeline for a rescue attempt for Zadia. Has there been any word on her?”

“She is still in Jeffos’ rooms as far as I know.” Grigori shrugged. “So far, she has not left, nor has anyone else gone in.”

“Have there been any other changes?” Malachi asked. “Any indication the Warguard is going to try anything new?”

When Grigori turned his attention to the other Alpha, his gaze flicked to Tatiana, then away again. Something had changed in the way the Beta looked at Tatiana since she started taking the suppressors, though Cora could not put her finger on exactly how.

“Not so far, but it must be coming.” Grigori spread his hands. “The Betas who staff the stronghold are not being allowed to leave. They have not seen their families in days.”

Which could be good or bad.

It also begged the question of how Grigori was still getting his information, but Cora knew from experience, he would never answer questions about that. He wanted to be indispensable. Since she would have replaced him the moment she could, she could not fault his instincts.

Sometimes, she wondered if he was double-crossing them to get information her own Betas had not, but she suspected the truth was he was just a slippery bastard. Self-centered but able to charm and with a knack for getting himself in and out of situations others could not.

At least they knew about the Betas being kept within Jeffos’ headquarters’ walls. She knew because of what their families had said. From the way Grigori phrased it, it sounded like his information was coming from within Jeffos’ walls.

“Interesting,” she said, not giving away they had already known. Grigori could be unpredictable when told his information was not as useful as he assumed.

“I think we need to move things faster.” Turning to look at her, Malachi’s green eyes were blazing.

Cora was not entirely sure his desire to speed up their plans was not, at least in part, because of the suppressors Tatiana was using and his desire to get her off of them, but it did not matter since, in this case, she was in agreement. Whatever his reason, things were moving faster apace than they had expected, partly because they had planned for Morpheus and his slow and careful plans rather than the new Captain of the Guard, who seemed more apt toward action, even when not being prodded by Jeffos.
